We are trying to keep as little cash as possible. We sell shares of some investments in order to raise cash.

I will admit that when both bond shares and stock shares drop, then it would have been better to have some cash I will also admit that when either bond shares or stock shares are rise, then it would have been better to not have cash because it was all used to get some of the stuff going up.

A few folks on this forum have listed reasons to have emergency fund: Need to pay for new HVAC, new roof, new car, whatever. But all of those can be paid easily by selling shares and moving the resulting cash to a checking account.
