thanks. So does one buy treasuries on any given day or do I have to wait for federal auction day and set a bid price? How does this work?
You can enter an order to buy at auction, but you don't know the price. That is determined at auction, and you get what you get. I use Fidelity; if I want to do this, there is an option to see what auctions are currently open and when they close. You have more than one day to enter your order, and then the auction will run and you'll see what you paid and what the yield is. You can Google "treasury auction schedule" to see what's available for upcoming weeks.

You can also buy them on the secondary market every day the market is open. In that situation, you'll see the market bid/ask prices.
