Just to echo others but for a different reason, max the 401k out every year if nothing else but to lower your AGI and pay less taxes YOY while taking advantage of compound interest.
Would that apply even if I drop down to the 12% (?) tax bracket after all the pretax deductions?
I am not jellyroll, but when I can put dollars into Roth (IRA or 401k) at 12% (or less) federal tax, I do so.
I do it via annual Roth conversions, now that I am early-retired.
And (when I was working) since I maxed out all my tax-deferred every year (avoiding 22% and 25% federal tax), I also did Roth IRA regardless of federal tax bracket, b/c I was ineligible for traditional IRA.
