I am not jellyroll, but when I can put dollars into Roth (IRA or 401k) at 12% (or less) federal tax, I do so.Would that apply even if I drop down to the 12% (?) tax bracket after all the pretax deductions?Just to echo others but for a different reason, max the 401k out every year if nothing else but to lower your AGI and pay less taxes YOY while taking advantage of compound interest.
I do it via annual Roth conversions, now that I am early-retired.
And (when I was working) since I maxed out all my tax-deferred every year (avoiding 22% and 25% federal tax), I also did Roth IRA regardless of federal tax bracket, b/c I was ineligible for traditional IRA.
