For liberal arts majors, I would have that concern. It's not just Ivy's that are expensive. There are a lot of private liberal arts colleges are just as expensive. To give one example, Bowdoin has a total cost of attendance of $89K/year and the average salary six years after graduation is $51K/year.
For STEM majors, the concern is less. STEM graduates average $76K/year in their first year after college. Add $10K if it is computer science. And starting salaries average over $100K for the elite university graduates.

Just for another point of reference; depending on location 2 year community college degree RNs are starting at $80K, throw in a BSN and ~$90K plus for base pay. Throw in OT, equivalent of other professions working 50-60 hour weeks, and the RN pay jumps to ~$130-160K+. The doors also opens to other career paths just as other degrees. There has to be some consideration of school of choice, program of choice, importance of networking, purpose of experience, projected pipeline from mom and dad, expected salary and career path to justify expense. I've seen a lot of that play out over many years.
