Have you seen the tax efficient fund placement wiki page? Can someone give me some links on what kind of investments a mid 50 year old should make in a brokerage account? I know that I should reduce the risk level of my portfolio, but I get the impression that it is better to hold bonds in my retirement accounts. Right now my brokerage account is as follows:
25% VMFXX - need to invest this
30% VOO
7% VWO
14% VXUS
24% QQQ
I plan to get rid of VWO and put that money into VXUS. I don't need the money in this brokerage account for the next 10 years since I have another account to handle the funds for those expenses. In my retirement accounts, I am investing in VTIAX, VTSAX, and VBTLX.
It's loaded with tips on which account types should hold which asset classes. Consider thinking of the portfolio as one entity, instead of a collection of accounts that each need their own distinct asset allocation.
You can also see the wiki for a more general discussion on asset allocation and the ability, willingness and need to take risk.
