Personal Investments • Re: Need to choose a new brokerage firm: Vanguard vs. Fidelity

Three weeks ago I switched from Vanguard to Fidelity after being with Vanguard for over 20 years.

What prompted me was not any dissatisfaction with Vanguard's service, website or investment options. It met my simple needs. I am a power user of Quicken and used Personal Capital free website to fill any gaps Vanguard did not meet.

My reason for switching was my employer moved our 401k to Fidelity and started offering free Fidelity Premium Services, which BTW is offered free to any accounts over I think $250K. So it isn't really a big deal.

Being with Vanguard for so long I did not realize things could be better elsewhere. Living like a frog in a well.

Fidelity's service is significantly better. Getting a live person is almost instantenous. The advisory team is super helpful and helps coordinate all activities.
Needless to say, Fidelity's website is far more intuitive and easy to use.

I am only into index funds so finding an equivalent Fidelity fund was not a problem. I do still hold couple of Vanguard Funds that I think are much superior.

My 2 cents, go with Fidelity.
A word of caution, Fidelity website and people "promote" trading and push variety of financial products. So a healthy measure of restraint and caution is needed.
