Positions from all of the funds have been sold before while it was set to Average Cost and this is what Fidelity has to say about it on the website: if you sold shares of a position in this account while it was set to the average cost method, shares acquired before converting to the specific identification method will retain their historic average cost basis going forward. So am I thinking about it right that I can't specify "old" shares to sell even if I changed cost basis to Specific ID right now?Correct. You must first ask Fidelity to set the cost basis to Specific ID.I must be doing something - when I go into the trade function of Fidelity to do a sell order I don't see any drop-down box in order to specify shares that I want to sell. Is that not an option with mutual funds set to Average Cost?
It doesn't matter much because I intend to sell the entirety of my higher-expense-ratio funds, but I had anticipated selling specifically short-term gains of FXAIX. Guess I can't do that.
