Do you get Social Security or a pension? Do you have enough income to live on without drawing on your 401k?
Does your 401k have a stable value fund or money market fund?
Does your company offer an option to convert some of your 401k to an annuity?
Would you feel safe enough if some portion of your equity funds remained in an equity fund and some were converted to safer funds?
How do you feel about a retirement date fund which may have 80% in bond funds and 20% in equity funds?
Perhaps you should take one of the risk questionnaires which tell how much equity/bond you should be comfortable with.
