Personal Investments • Re: Those complimentary dinners for retirees by investment advisors

For those of you who are “plate lickers” and attend the free dinners just for the food, be aware that some of your fellow “diners” might not be disinterested parties. See the example below.

I recently sat through an FIA presentation at a local library because my wife received an advertisement about it and wanted to attend. There were about 40 people in attendance, and a few of them were perhaps a little too enthusiastic. Made me wonder.

At the beginning of the presentation the presenter requested that we refrain from asking questions because he claimed that he had too much material to cover in the time allotted. Nevertheless some of the "enthusiastic" people did ask questions anyway. They seemed like softball questions that supported his pitch. He gladly took the time to answer them.

I held back on my questions out of respect for the presenter's request at the beginning. My questions would have been much more probing and even maybe a little awkward. I wonder how he would have responded.

There was a palpable excitement in the room as if some of the people seemed to be discovering this "free lunch" for the very first time. It was very hard to explain to my wife.
