The reason financial advisors use a lot of funds is to make it appear they are doing something for the money you pay them. Small cap, mid cap, large cap then double that by using value and growth sub divisions for the the 3 sizes. Then add international with size and value and growth divisions. Then add a variety of bond funds. Or just buy total stock market index funds for both domestic and international. Vanguards uses 2-3 bonds funds in their target date funds. Just buy the target date (which has the total stock market domestic and international funds plus bonds )and you have 1 fund instead of 16 with lower expense rations and no hidden fees and no 1% fee on top of everything else. Just dead simple. Plus as good as or better diversification.
