This is very insightful, coming from a California resident. But our school zone (we are renting) ratings are 4 / 5 / 7 for elementary / middle / high schools. So, we may have to send our kid to private school for elementary / middle schools, unless we move or buy a home in a good school zone.
We did charter schools for a while because we wanted language immersion. Still public (and free), but we had to drive 15-20 minutes to drop them off and pick them up.
Wow, so 529 in California cannot be used until age 18 at all, unless I'm missing something.
That was true everywhere in the country for the first 20+ years these plans existed until 2017 added K-12 tuition as a sop to the religious crowd.
